This guy named Mark Gubin has all the reasons to be in news. Mark Gubin is an artist and photographer in Milwaukee and decades ago he realized that his studio was along the flight path to the Milwaukee’s Mitchell International Airport.
What he did in 1978 is that he painted the sign “WELCOME TO CLEVELAND” , written in six-foot tall letters on his rooftop. The problem is that he wrote cleveland when it was actually Milwaukee. For last 37 years, Mark Gubin’s sign has been confusing – and terrifying – passengers who were suddenly convinced they were going to the wrong place. Interestingly, he was later told a special announcement was made on a regular flight from Denver to Cleveland that made a stopover in Milwaukee.
Gubin first got the idea to paint the sign when he was having lunch on the roof of his apartment with his assistant at the time, and she noticed all the low-flying planes that came by. Her assistant told him that he should post a sign welcoming people to Milwaukee. Gubin told her he had an even better idea. When asked about his intentions Gubin said ‘It was all tongue-in-cheek, just for fun,’ he said of the sign. ‘Living in the world is not a dress rehearsal. You better have fun with it.’
