Bengaluru Waste-Picker To Speak At United Nations Climate Change Conference.

It was a moment of extreme proud and happiness not just for the 33-year-old waste-picker Mansoor Ahmed but his entire family. He feels that his hard work has finally paid off and it was never possible without the support of his family, customers and well-wishers.

Mansoor Ahmed is now all set be a participant at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris. He will speak at the conference, COP (Conference Of Parties) 21, which is scheduled to be held from November 30 to December 11. When he heard this news for the first time he said, “This is my first visit to a foreign country…and in an airplane. I’m feeling ecstatic and proud. Never in my life had I imagined that I would get such an opportunity.”

He is not a normal waste-picker. He aims to spread awareness about waste management and waste segregation. In Paris, he would get an opportunity to talk about the importance of waste segregation and how he convinced 75% of his customers to segregate the waste at the source itself. Spreading consciousness about the subject led him to the UN conference on Climate Change.

When asked if he can speak in English language, Mansoor said,”English is not a problem as long as my work talks for me. I’m genuine and there is sincerity in my work which will speak for me. Besides, I will have a translator. As part of my talk, I will be narrating my journey from a seven-year-old rag-picker to what I’m today.”

Mansoor operates the Dry Waste Collection Centre (DWCC) along with 12 other members and will represent Alliance of Indian Waste-pickers (AIW) at the event. His trip is being sponsored by Hasiru Dala, which is a coalition member at the AIW and an organisation of waste-pickers and waste workers.
