Time Taken To Travel To Work Will Be Counted As Work. Great News For European Workers

It is widely appreciated that European work laws are quite favorable for their employees and workers. In another breakthrough case against a security company TYCO, European Court of Justice ruled that time taken to travel to and from work for some jobs could be counted as part of a working day. This should be the case for staff & workers without a fixed or regular workplace who generally travel from home to and from a variety of locations.

The Case

The case was filed by Spanish trade union against TYCO which closed their regional offices in Spain in 2011 and wanted their staff to travel to various sites directly from their homes which sometimes took up to 3 hours to reach a client. And, the company treated that time of travel as the rest period.

The Judgement by Court

The fact that the workers begin and finish the journeys at their homes stems directly from the decision of their employer to abolish the regional offices and not from the desire of the workers themselves. The employers want their employees to travel to different locations directly from their homes. The decision would ensure that workers are paid for their first visit of the day from home to the client’s location and for their last visited client to their homes.

We really hope that condition the condition also improve with better labour laws for Indian workers too.
