Delhi-Based Smriti Nagpal Made It To The BBC’s 100 Inspirational Women List

Nagpal is an ordinary person with extraordinary dreams. She even says that her dreams are like Bollywood movies. So, it was pretty clear that she is not going to live a conventional life. When most of the people look out for good jobs and business opportunities after a business degree, she started a social enterprise for hearing impaired people.

Her Motivation

Like they say, charity begins at home. Her passion towards sign language (a language for hearing impaired person) stemmed from her own family as two of her siblings were hearing impaired. So speaking in sign language was a regular affair for her.

Thereafter, Smriti did a lot of sign language assignments including a sign language news bulletin on Doordarshan and working as a sign language interpreter with National Association of Deaf. On one of the occasions, she met a deaf artist who had a degree in fine arts asked for her help to find a job. Along with him, she met other deaf artists and observed that they all were working in a shell and it was not possible for them to grow without communication and collaboration.

Atylyakala, A design Studio, was born as a result with an idea to showcase that deaf people can easily work with people who can hear.

Today, Atulyakala has two lines of business and a social mission. They sell lifestyle products like bags, journals and art frames that are designed by deaf artists in collaboration with a hearing artist. There’s also a design studio that takes up client projects related to branding, design, curation and illustration for publishing houses. Finally, they conduct events about inclusion and spread awareness about sign language.

“I always wanted to make my father proud. I was eagerly waiting for those words from him but it never happened. Today, when he saw my name with the likes of Asha Bhosle and Sania Mirza, he hugged me and said he wants to tell the world that I am his daughter,” said 25-year-old Smriti in an interview with TOI.

Kudos Ms Nagpal. You are making our country proud. :)
