Gujarat Gets It’s First ‘Smoke-Free Village’ . What A Great News!!

Amid concerns about rising pollution levels and debates about climate change for past couple of month, this news came as a step ahead in achieving the vision of a ‘Greener’ world.

A couple of weeks after Vyachakurahalli Village in Karnataka was declared as country’s first smoke-free village, it was now Gujarat’s turn to get it’s first smoke-free village. Village Govindpura which comes under Kadi tehsil of Mehsana district was declared smoke-free this Tuesday when Panchayat development officer, Waghji Desai, gave a letter certifying the conversion of all households to LPG to the officials of Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOC), which is the only supplier of LPG cylinders to this village.

A state where more than 6 million homes still rely on years old sources of fuel like crop residue, firewood and cow-dung cakes, as fuel used for cooking.  The village has a literacy rate of 91 percent – higher than the state average.

While speaking to the Indian Express Utkarsha Telang, assistant manager at IOC, said, “we had a hard time convincing the villagers to give up firewood which is freely available, but has a negative effect on the health of the womenfolk.”

All 143 households in the village have now shifted to LPG from traditional sources of fuel. The village sarpanch, Mansukh Patel, also expressed happiness about this and said, “Apart from conserving the firewood that we used to light our ‘chulhas’ every day, we will also be saving over 300 litres of kerosene that was consumed every month in this village.”

Hopefully other Indian villages will follow the suit.
