There is a lot to learn from everywhere. And, this time Indian states and cities should learn from Sikkim which became the first Indian city to be declared 100 percent sanitation covered. In fact, you’ll be surprised to know that Sikkim is the only state in India where Anti-spitting laws are in place in every village and district of the state and there is fine up to Rs 200 if there is a breach. Let’s take a look at some more facts about India’s 100% sanitation covered state:
1. It is the only state in India where the use of polyethene got banned in August 1997. One is not allowed to throw garbage anywhere on the streets. And to make sure this doesn’t happen dustbins are kept around the state.
2. Even when you are travelling in a taxi, you are not allowed throw litter outside of taxi. There are mobile dustbins installed within the cab to be used for that purpose.
3. Smoking at public places is not allowed. You can be slapped with a fine of Rs 200. There are dedicated smoking zones and rooms are made available to the public.
4. In an attempt to control the air and noise pollution, the state has put a ban on firing crackers. And, environment as a subject in schools is mandatory.
5. The state has constructed 98,043 household latrines, surpassing the target of 87,014. Of these 61,493 latrines have been built for below poverty line (BPL) families.
6. In order to sensitize people about environment related issues, Sikkim government started an initiative in 2009 called ’10 Minute To Earth’ wherein every individual is asked to plant a tree every year in the month of June. The idea is to have the plant population equivalent to the human population. One Person, One Tree, One Time.
Why look toward other countries if we have examples to follow within our own country. And, all this would never have been possible in Sikkim without the dynamic leadership of Chief Minister Pawan Chamling who has been in the office for last 20 years.
We really hope other states soon follow the Sikkim Model. You can also view the entire video.
