3 Sikhs Sworn In As Cabinet Ministers In Canadian Parliament

It was not long ago when Punjabi was declared as the third official language in the house of commons in the Parliament of Canada. Another great news came in for the Punjabi community with the appointment of 3 Sikhs as cabinet ministers in the Canadian parliament.

At the sworn in ceremony happened at Rideau Hall in Ottawa, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took oath along with his 30 member cabinet including 3 Sikhs. 42-year-old Harjit Sajjan took oath as the defence minister, 38-year-old Navdeep Bains was appointed as the minister for innovation, science and economic development and Amarjeet Sohi (non-turbaned) sworn in as the minister for infrastructure.

Navdeep Bains, who became MP for the third time had served as the parliamentary secretary to the Prime Minister in 2005. On the other hand, Mr Sajjan has been the first Sikh to command a Canadian Regiment. He also served as a special advisor on Afghanistan and was awarded Meritorious Service Medal in 2013.

The Punjabi community in Canada constitutes 1.3% of the total population of Canada and newly appointed 20 Punjabi speaking MPs represent almost 6% of the total house.

Great news indeed.
