It is quite certain that a language known as ‘Saimar’ will soon become extinct if nothing is done to preserve that language, said Sukurthang Saimar during 44th Foundation day celebration of Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL) in 2012.
Sukurthang Saimar is one of the four people speaking the language. Others include his wife, grandson and grandson’s mother. The Saimars belong to Halam Tribe in the state of Tripura, a forest-dwelling tribe of Tripura. In 2009, the tribe had about 25 speakers, but it has now reduced to only four. The reasons have been attributed to several of them heading to cities in search of employment. Another reason for the decline in the number of speakers is Genetic disorder due to which there are no girls born in the tribe.
CIIL is taking steps to preserve the language and prevent it from extinction. They are looking to collect data from Sukurthang for its archive.
Mr. Sukurthang Saimar became emotional when he was asked to address the gathering in his language. He came to the podium and spoke in a loud voice. Though he spoke a few words, the message (translated into English by Mr. Burman) was very strong. “My language and community are in danger. I appeal to the people of this country to help protect and preserve my language,” he said.
