Remembering Indo-Pak 1965 War: Everthing You Need To Know About The War

No matter how good the intention is, every war brings misery, death & loss to property. At the outset of the commemoration of 1965 war, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA government has planned events at the national capital.

Let’s look at the chain of events which led to this war between Indian & Pakistan:

1. Skirmishes began in April 1965, with both countries trying to capture and destroy each other’s posts.

2. In August 1965, Pakistan started “Operation Gibraltar”  to infiltrate Jammu & Kashmir and start a rebellion against Indian rule.  They objective was to play insurgency among Indian Muslims. The strategy failed because of poor coordination and gave birth to Indo-Pakistan War of 1965.

3. Towards the end of August, each side had relative success. Indian had captured Haji Pir Pass and Pakistan had made progress in Tithwal, Uri and Poonch.

4. On 1st September 1965, Pakistan started Operation Grand Slam to capture a place called Akhnoor in Jammu but the operation failed miserably.

5. On 6th September 1965, India crossed the international border which officially marked the beginning of the war. Major general Prasad fought with Pakistani Army to cross Ichhogil canal (East of Lahore). Initially, he failed and forced to flee but was successful in his second attempt.

6. On 10th September 1965, Munabao,  post in Rajasthan was occupied by Pakistan. For the next couple of days, India occupied a couple of Pakistani areas and vice versa resulting in a stalemate.

7. It was the first air battle between India and Pakistan. IAF was numerically superior and PAK was technically superior comprising of F-865F Sabres, F-104 Starfighters etc.

8. The ceasefire was facilitated by the then Indian Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri and Pakistan’s president Ayub Khan signed the “Tashkent Agreement.” On 22nd September 1965 the United Nations Security Council unanimously passed a resolution that called for an unconditional ceasefire among two nations. The ceasefire remained in effect until the start of Indo-Pak 1971 war.

9. In a book written by Retd. Air Marshal Bharat Kumar it is also mentioned that there was no decisive victory. Both countries mauled each other But it was never a complete win for any country.
