While a vast majority of Indians continue to prefer sons, a small village in Rajasthan not only celebrates the birth of the girl child but also created a tradition that benefits the planet. Since 2006, the residents of Piplantri village in Rajsamand district of Rajasthan have been planting 111 trees to celebrate the birth of a girl child. The villagers have managed to plan 250,000 trees so far including varieties like Neem, Rosewood, and Mango.
This beautiful tradition was started by the former sarpanch (head) of the village, Shyam Sundar Paliwal, in the memory of his loving daughter Kiran who passed away some years ago.
Now, planting trees is one part of the tradition. The other part is ensuring financial security for the newborn. As part of this initiative, the village committee collect Rs 21000 from village residents and Rs 10,000 from the family of daughter and deposit that money in a 20-year government bond.
And, there’s still more to this unique tradition. Once the money is collected and deposited in the bank. The next step for parents is to sign an affidavit promising that they will not marry her daughter before the legal age.
The trees which are planted are also taken care off by the residents. In order to protect them from termite infestations they plant aloe vera plants along so that the trees are not damaged. The plantation of Aloe Vera has generated a source of livelihood for villagers. They now make and market aloe vera products like gel, pickle etc.
It is quite difficult to believe that such a village also exists in India. Other villages in India have a lot to learn from Piplantri.
