I am sure the legendary qawwali singer needs no introduction. Born as Parvez Fateh Ali Khan, he is still considered to be one of the greatest voices ever recorded. He possessed an extraordinary range of vocal abilities which allowed him to sing with the high level of intensity for hours.
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is also said to be the most important artist who popularized qawwali & introduced it to the western world. In his singing career of 25 years, his music transcended boundaries and was loved by people across countries. So much that Alexandra A. Seno of Asiaweek wrote: “Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s voice was otherworldly. For 25 years, his mystical songs transfixed millions. It was not long enough … He performed qawwali, which means wise or philosophical utterance, as nobody else of his generation did. His vocal range, talent for improvisation and sheer intensity were unsurpassed.”
His music and style had a strong influence across the world and his legacy will continue to inspire generations.
Let’s celebrate the singing maestro’s birth anniversary with some of his best qawwalis.
