Who Is Noor Jehan? Why Did PM Modi Praise Her In ‘Mann Ki Baat’?

It was Sunday, 29 November 2015, and the time was 11:21 AM when PM Modi spoke about a lady named Noor Jehan during his ‘Mann Ki Baat’ address, a resident of Village Beri Dariyawan some 25 kms from Kanpur. It was the most rewarding and joyous moment for the 55-year-old.

“I am extremely happy that the Prime Minister took my name and praised my work. It is a morale booster,” said Noor Jehan welcoming BJP members who took no time in discovering her after she found a mention in PM’s Mann Ki Baat.

A number of issues and topics were covered by PM Modi during his 14th Mann Ki Baat and Climate Change was one of the main issues highlighted by him. Modi further mentioned how common people are doing their bit to fight climate change by citing the example of Noor Jehan, who rents out solar lamps for a living.

Once surviving on a mere ₹15 a day, Noor Jehan now gives our lanterns to people of 5 villages near Kanpur and earns much more than she used to some years ago. She charges an average of ₹100 per month for a single lamp and helps more than 50 families. She now has 50 lamps of which 40 are rented out daily. The electricity infrastructure is virtually non-existent in those villages.

Initially, she used the lamp to light her home at night, but she started renting it out when she ran out of money for her children’s studies. “When the NGO came to know that I’ve started renting out the lamp, they provided me with some more. Today, I have 50 of them and the NGO has given me five more solar plates as well,” Noor Jehan said.

Hopefully, now Noor Jehan is able to get some financial help from the government and carry this lantern of change. Kudos for such a great work. :)
