Even though the legal marriage age for any girl in India is 18 years but we see a huge number of cases of child marriages every year here. It doesn’t depend on what is written in the law but what matters in the enforcement of the law. You would not imagine legal marriageable age in some parts of the US is as low as 12 years. Even worse than India.
Let’s look at some of these countries and their minimum marriageable age.
1. Bangladesh minimum marriageable age is same as in India. In spite of this law, child marriage rates in Bangladesh is one of the highest in the world.
2. Normally its 18 years for both girl & boy. If you have court and your family’s permission, then you can get married at 16.
3. According to the law, it’s 18 but you can get married at 15 with the consent of the court and both parents.
4. Legal age is 18 but with permission of family it is 14 for boys and 16 for girls.
5. Legally it is 18 and 16 respectively for men & women. But according to a UNICEF report, 70% of girls are married before 16.
6. The marriage is possible at this age but with family’s approval whatsoever.
7. No minimum age.
8. This is the marriageable age but court’s permission is required.
9. This is one of the lowest marriageable age.
10. No permission required at this age.
11. Highest in the list.
12. Though the legal age is 21 and 18 for male and female respectively but a huge number of child marriages are practiced in India.
