“Live as if you were to die tomorrow, Learn as if you were to live forever” – Mahatma Gandhi
Learning is a never ending process. It is often said that if you stop learning, you stop living. Learning is the only thing in life that will make you wise and humble. You get a chance to learn from everywhere – your surroundings, your colleagues, newspapers, movies, plays, books, novels etc.
All you got to do is to carry an attitude open to learning. You will find wisdom everywhere. There is one movie, in particular, where I’d like to take your attention to – THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS. This movie has a lot to offer, based on the story of a stockbroker Chris Gardner, who once had no food to eat and no house to live, now runs his own international holding companies with offices in several states in the US and lives a prosperous life.
The movie shows how a person can survive extremely harsh conditions in life and still won’t give up. Chris Gardner is subject of the movie and a book by the same name.
1. Positive mental attitude
This is not as easy as it sounds. Chris Gardner’s mother once said, “If you want to, one day you could make a million dollars.” The words said by his mother stayed with Chris all his life. In all circumstances, good or bad, he never gave up.
2. Persistence & Determination
People who succeed have already made up their mind what they want to do and pay no heed to any negative thoughts coming their way. If you remember the scene when he was an intern at a stock broking company, he would make 200 calls or may be more in a single day just to get the right client who is willing to listen to his offer. He would even skip his breaks so that he can call to as many people as possible.
3. Get inspiration
A lot of people often feel jealous by looking at the success of other people. But if you remember that scene where Chris asks a random person on the street, “You look so happy. I wanna know what do you do and how do you do it.” Instead of being jealous, he took inspiration from lives of people and carried a positive attitude with grace.
4. No excuses in life
Your colleagues may have different excuses as to why they were not able to do a particular task. But life is not about giving excuses. The example that I’d like to quote here would be the scene where Chris Gardner is called for an interview for a permanent job of a stock broker. The night before the interview he was busy painting his apartment only to get arrested for failing to pay his parking tickets because of which he had to appear for the interview with paint marks on his body and no formals.
The point that I am trying to make here is that he could have made an excuse and not turned up for the interview but he didn’t. Later on this is what he said in his interview, “Can I say something? Um, I’m the type of person that if you ask me a question and I don’t know the answer, I’m gonna tell you that I don’t know. But I bet you what, I know how to find the answer and I will find the answer.”
5. Don’t let others opinion stop you
I always remember Chris telling his son that “You got a dream, you gotta protect it. People can’t do something themselves they wanna tell you that you can’t do it. You want something, go get it. Period.”
Another perfect scene for this statement would be the one where he is told on a cab that he cannot solve Rubik’s Cube during a taxi ride. Both driver and the person were shocked when he solved the puzzle in his first attempt.
6. Never quit
He is put in jail. He slept in bathrooms. He ate no food. He was kicked out of his apartment. He failed in his previous business miserably. His wife left him.
STILL HE NEVER QUIT!!
