Dil Se completed 17 years this weekend.Till date, it is considered to be one of the finest films by Mani Ratnam and a movie which in closer to Shah Rukh’s heart. It was last movie in Ratnam’s trilogy of terror films after Roja & Bombay. The movie was written Tigmanshu Dhulia who is better known for his role in Gangs of Wasseypur as Ramadhir Singh.
The movie fared well internationally in spite being a box office flop in India. On the 17th Anniversary of the Film, we would like to share 14 lesser known facts about the movie.
1. Dil Se was a success overseas. It earned $975,000 (USA) and £537,930 in the UK, thereby becoming the first Indian film to enter the top 10 in the United Kingdom box office chart.
2. It was Preity Zinta’s Debut Movie.
3. “Ladakh – Ek Prem Kahani” was its original name.
4. Kajol was the first choice for the role of Meghna. But because of non-availability of dates Kajol couldn’t sign it.
5. No safety equipment was used by Shah Rukh For the song “Chaiyya Chaiyya.”
6. “Chaiyya Chaiyya” song was shot on top of Nilgiri Express and the entire train was painted brown.
7. “Chaiyya Chaiyya” song is actually inspired from a Sufi song called “Thayya Thayya”.
8. “Chaiyya Chaiyya” was used as the opening song for Denzel Washington’s movie Inside Man.
9. Malaika Arora wasn’t the first choice for the song “Chaiyya Chaiyya”.
10. American TV show CSI used the song “Chaiyya Chaiyya” in an episode.
11. “Proximas” by Shades of Paradise sampled “Chaiyya Chaiyya.” You can find it here.
12. It was bollywood’s first movie which dealt with seven shades as described in Arabic literature. These include attraction, infatuation, love, reverence, worship, obsession, and death.
13. Inspired from the song “Chaiyya Chaiyya” film director Partho Ghosh tried to make a movie with a same name
14. Some parade scenes of the movie were shot during India’s 50th Independence Day celebrations.
