102-Year-Old Kuwarbai Yadav Is An Inspiration Behind Construction Of Toilets In Chattisgarh

With Modi government claiming to have built 80 Lakh toilets under ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’ against a target of 12 crore toilets by 2019, this 102-year-old woman is single-handedly leading this initiative in some villages in Chattisgarh.

Kuwarbai Yadav has set an example by selling off her goats for Rs 22000 for building a toilet at her house in Kotabharri village in Dhamtari District. She is coming across as the vanguard of toilet construction campaign and also inspiring a lot of people from other villages to construct toilets at home. In her attempt to educate people, she went from door to door in her village to motivate and encourage people to make it an open-defecation free zone.

What inspired her to start this initiative?

I attended a ‘chaupal’ where I came to know about diseases that could spread from open defecation. I thought of doing something on my own. I sold off my goats and told everyone about my plan to construct a toilet,” said Kuwarbai.in an interview with TOI.

The district administration has also joined hands with the local collector to get the subsidy for toilet construction under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme. As a result of her efforts, her village was declared open defecation free village in July this year.

We salute Kuwarbai Yadav for her efforts in making India a better place.
