8 Key Takeaways From Mark Zuckerberg’s Townhall At IIT Delhi

It seems that Mark Zuckerberg loves India for a number of reasons. In less than a month after he hosted India’s Prime Minister Modi at Facebook headquarters for a Townhall Q&A, he is back in India for a townhall Q&A at IIT Delhi. Following are the main takeaways from his townhall session at IIT Delhi.

1. It is important to connect people in India. He said that they can’t connect the world without connecting India. By connecting India, they will help the whole world in the form of ideas by brilliant entrepreneurial minds in India which are otherwise not exposed to the world.

2. In response to a question about how Facebook plans to get people online, he said that it will be done through Internet.org. So far, over 15 Mn people from more than 24 countries are brought online since this initiative was launched.

3. According to a research, for every 10 people connected to the internet, 1 job is created and 1 person is lifted out of poverty.

4. 4 Bn people in this world don’t have access to the internet because of 3 major issues – availability, affordability, and awareness. All three are being worked upon by facebook.

5. In response to a question about future products that Facebook is planning to introduce, Mark said that their focus is more on giving intelligence to the existing products rather than introducing new products. As an example, he stated that artificial intelligence (AI) could be used for building computer systems which have better human sensing powers like translating languages, reading, helping blind people identify images etc.

6. Mark also talked about their focus on health and science so that they can find a cure for diseases that exist today in such a way that our future generations are free from such diseases.

7. They fully support net neutrality. “Net neutrality is an important principle; we support it in terms of regulations and building an open platform for any developer,” he said while addressing the students and faculty at IIT.

8. Last but not the least, a question about the unstoppable Candy Crush requests. And fortunately, he has an answer for all the frustrated folks out there. The team is working on a fix to prevent Candy Crush requests.
