Amid cases of rising intolerance by certain extremist groups and political parties, Jumammasjid in Malappuram City of Kerala stands firmly as a symbol of communal harmony in the region. People gather here every year to celebrate the martyrdom of warriors who lost their lives during a battle against erstwhile Zamorin (Ruler) of Kozhikode some 290 years ago.
The significant thing is that there was one Hindu warrior named Kunhelu who fought along with his Muslim friends. It is believed that Kunhelu lost his life along with 43 other Muslim warriors. He belonged to the thattan (goldsmith) community.
So the celebrations every year at the mosque are attended by his descendants. They are invited to the prayer meetings and also offered food and sweets at the end of the ceremony.
Sayed Muthukkoya Thangal, khazi of Malappuram, said the tradition showcased the unity among Hindus and Muslims. Historian K K N Kuruppu said people cutting across communal differences had joined hands in fighting for a common cause centuries ago.
