Though, this may sound like an inspirational movie plot but, it’s a real story of a girl from Warangal district in Telangana who always believed in hard work and the power to dream. Unwilling to live a life that was preordained for her, she beat all odds to emerge a winner.
A woman who once couldn’t afford a saree worth ₹135 now wears a saree worth ₹100,000 is surely a sign of her hard work and perseverance. Jyothi was forced to marry at an early age of 16 and all her all her hopes of a better life seemed to recede like the bullock cart in the rear-view mirror of a speeding highway truck. Thus, she doomed to a fate of a farm labourer working in the fields under the blazing hot sun at a meager salary of ₹5 a day. She worked in farms from 1985-90. She became a mother at 17 with her first daughter. At 18 she was a mother of two girls.
At that time, she dreamt of having more than enough food to feed her children. Neither satisfied herself nor she was wanted to give the same life to her daughters that she was living. “I could not stand being poor. I was born poor and was wed into another poor family,” she told Yourstory in a telephonic interview.
From Farm Labourer to a Government Teacher
As they say, where there is a will, there is a way. A dream of having a better life for her daughters always kept her going. Jyoti got an opportunity to work as a government teacher where she was given a job to motivate students to learn basics at a night school. She got promoted soon and her salary increased to Rs 120. She was happy, but her aspirations did not end here.
From Government Teacher to the American Dream
A chance meeting with her cousin from the US fired her imagination and she knew it in her heart that if she had to escape this vortex of poverty she had to go to the US. It was her cousin who inspired her to come to the US. He said, “an aggressive woman like you can easily manage in America.” His comments were like adding fuel to the fire.
Without wasting any further time, she got herself enrolled into a computer software class travelling a distance of 140 Kms daily from Warangal to Hyderabad. She just had one thought doing rounds on her mind – A great life for her kids. By 1995, her salary as a teacher was ₹5000. Additionally, she earned ₹25000 from a chit fund business that she started as a way to generate extra income for her US dream.
America was not easy either. She worked as a sales girl, a room service attendant, a babysitter, a gas station attendant & a software recruiter before starting her own company.
Today, Jyothi is the CEO of a $15 million IT company, Key Software Solutions, based in Phoenix, Arizona, US.
