Mysuru Railway Station is now officially India’s first blind-friendly railway station in the country. The initiative was started with an objective of empowering blind people to travel independently.
This dream has been made possible by a bunch of passionate individuals working at ANUPRAYAAS, an NGO which aims to create awareness regarding visual impairment and blindness, in association with south western railways which helped them in the project. Following are the key points that everyone must know:
1. Tactile maps have been installed at the station which will give people an idea about the physical layout of the station including platforms, counters, distance from entrance, washrooms etc.
2. Train itinerary signboard will help them with train schedules and timings.
3. 400 metal signages are installed along the railings of the staircases to provide directions and platform information.
4. Canteens and food outlets at the station will now have menu cards in braille also.
The first phase of this project was completed on November 3, 2015.
Kudos to team Anuprayaas jinke prayaas ke bine ye sambhav nahi tha (without them this wouldn’t have been possible).
