She Once Survived Tsunami. She Is Now India’s Youngest Cycling Sensation

11 years ago she was not sure if she is going to survive through the most devastating Tsunami in Port Blair, but her courage kept her going. Now, she is India’s youngest cycling sensation. Meet 20-year-old Deborah Herold.

Her rank shot 6 places up to World Number 4 becoming the first female in India in the recently concluded Track Asia Cup held in New Delhi. Prior to this event, she was at number 10 according to UCI Ranking, world governing body for sports cycling.

She collected 211 points in a 500-meter time trial and created history. According to TOI, her three medals were crucial to India’s cycling contingent finishing at third place with 11 medals. She not only improved her ranking with her brilliant performance but also helped India move up it’s ranking to number 13.

Onkar Singh, Secretary General, Cycling Federation of India said, “We are very happy that Indian Cyclists are improving day by day and I’m sure that Deborah will bring more laurels for the country. The chances for Indian team to qualify for World Championship are much brighter now.”

The world cycling centre in Switzerland also announced a 75% concession to Indian cyclists after looking at their fantabulous performance at the recent event.

When asked about her achievement Deborah said, “I just want to do well, keep our medal tally increasing. I am in a very happy space right now with the team, we are working hard to keep the tempo up.”
