India Ranks 81 Out Of 141 On Global Innovation Index, #3 On Innovation Quality In Middle Income Countries

According to a recent report released by Global Innovation Index (GII) 2015 co-published by Cornell University, INSEAD and World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), India is ranked 81 out of 141 countries surveyed with a score of 31.74 out of 100. The GII report released this Thursday takes into account following key parameters – institutions, human capital and research, infrastructure, market sophistication, business sophistication, knowledge and technology outputs and creative outputs.

Globally, Switzerland is ranked as the most innovative country followed by UK and Sweden while India stood at the top position in Central and Southern Asia countries followed by Kazakhstan & Sri Lanka and number 3 for Innovation Quality amongst middle-income countries. Besides this, the report refers to Indian as ‘Innovation Achiever’.

Though it should be a situation to worry for India as its rank continues to drop every year. But according to Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) director Chandrajit Banerjee, “relative fall in India’s overall ranking this year is due to availability of old data up-to 2103-14 period, and it does not truly reflect the performance of the economy in last one year.” He also mentioned that the new innovation policies adopted by the current government are not properly captured by GII.
