In a blog post yesterday, Google Co-Founder announced massive restructuring of the company, instituting Sundar Pichai as the new CEO of Google moving him and Co-Founder Sergey Brin to a new Company called Alphabet. Before this, Sundar was heading the product and engineering responsibilities of their Internet Business.

The idea behind creating a new company is to make the system cleaner and more accountable. Alphabet will be a collection of companies and largest of which would be Google. Alphabet will also include companies which are far afield from their main internet products like Life Sciences (that works on the glucose-sensing contact lens), and Calico (focused on longevity). Larry and Sergey believe to have strong CEO’s for each of their business as this would allow them more management scale and help them whenever needed.

Alphabet Inc. will replace Google Inc. as the publicly-traded entity and all shares of Google will automatically convert into the same number of shares of Alphabet, with all of the same rights.

On Sundar Pichai becoming the CEO of Google, Larry also wrote – “I feel very fortunate to have someone as talented as he is to run the slightly slimmed down Google and this frees up time for me to continue to scale our aspirations. I have been spending quite a bit of time with Sundar, helping him and the company in any way I can, and I will, of course, continue to do that. Google itself is also making all sorts of new products, and I know Sundar will always be focused on innovation — continuing to stretch boundaries. I know he deeply cares that we can continue to make big strides on our core mission to organize the world’s information.”
Born in Chennai, Sundar graduated from IIT Kharagpur and went on to pursue his masters from Stanford and then an MBA Degree from Wharton.
