IIT Delhi Students Trying To “Add Color” To The Eyes Of The Blind

There is a Social Innovation Cell at IIT Delhi which is part of National Service Scheme. Over the past 2-3 years, a couple of students working under this cell are trying to develop technologies for ‘Social Good’. Technologies that will help the society. Some of the initiatives include developing a color sensor for the blind, low-cost bed for blood donation and a host of accessible computer and mobile game etc.

This was part of Hackathon for Social Good which happened last Saturday. The objective of the hackathon was to prove that you don’t need to have a Ph.D. to solve problems, said Amar Srivastava who is the general secretary of National Service Scheme. The students who participated in the event will submit their prototypes by the end of this week.

The inspiration behind developing the sensor is a person named Kartik Sawhney. Kartik is the first student who is blind to have completed his schooling in Science stream and is currently studying at Stanford. So, the color sensor is developed keeping science students into consideration because they have to check the color of compounds in the lab. This marker-sized object can currently detect 16 colors.

Indeed, a great initiative by the folks at IIT. You are the ones making India proud.
