1. On Tuesday evening, when Hardik seemed to have disillusioned many of the agitators by deciding to go on a fast rather than prolong the protest to a second day, the police blundered by deciding to formally detain him. This led to increased support from the community and also gave the agitation a second wind at a time when it looked like it will fizzle out.

2. Resorting to lathi charge was an even bigger goof-up. Instead of handling peaceful protesters in a non-violent way, police chose to lathi charge them and in turn faced violent reactions from agitators.

3. When lathi charge was not enough police started firing at protesters in other places, killing four Patidars in Ahmedabad, three in Banaskantha, one in Mehsana, and one in Surat. As a result public property was damaged, police attacked and the retaliation continued for the second day.
