Here are the chain of events leading to Patidar agitation and eventually leading to curfew in many cities of Gujarat.
July 2015
July 2015: Supported by Sardar Patel Sevadal, Patidar community of Gujarat started demonstrations across the state.
July 2015: Their objective is to get Other backward class (OBC) status for Patidars (Patels) and reservation in government jobs and education.
July 2015: They form Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) for this purpose which is headed by 21-year-old Hardik Patel.
July 2015: Other communities which participate in the agitation include Sardar Patel Group (SPG) headed by Lalji Patel, Sardar Patel Seva Dal, Patidar Sankalan Samiti and Patidar Arakshan Samiti.
July 2015: First demonstration held in Mehsana on July 6, followed by Mansa on 22 July, Visnagar on 23rd July and Vijapur on 28th July 2015.
Most businesses, schools, and colleges were closed.
8:30 AM: major demonstration dubbed Kranti Rally was organized in Ahmedabad at GMDC ground. Venue almost full.
10:14 AM: Hardik Patel Arrives and starts addressing the rally.
Key points that he mentioned in his speech:
1. If you don’t talk about our interest, Lotus will not bloom the mud. If we can uproot congress in 1985, we can do the same for BJP in 2017.
2. If we don’t get our rights, we can snatch it.
3. We are the descendants of Lord Ram & Sardar Patel.
4. In response to non-clarity on Supreme Court guidelines, he said “If Supreme Court can open at 3.30 in the morning for a terrorist, then why not for the youth, the future of this nation?”
11:45 AM: Hardik Patel and Ketan Patel on fast-unto-death until CM Anandi Patel personally takes their memorandum.
1:26 PM: Agitators forced shopkeepers to shut their shops.
3:26 PM: Minor clash reported between cops and Patidar protestors near Mansi Circle.
3:30 PM: Hardik Patel said, “We’re holding a peaceful rally, still police lathi charged our workers, if the situation worsens in Gujarat, the Govt will be responsible for that.”
3:42 PM: Gujarat CM Anandiben Patel calls emergency meeting to discuss the situation.
8:36 PM: Hardik Patel arrested.
9:29 PM: Violent reactions in Ahmedabad, stone pelting on buses. Home minister Rajni Patel’s house attacked.
9:51 PM: Hardik Patel released.
10:40 PM: Unrest in the crowd leading to violence in the area. Gujarat CM Anandiben asks people to support state administration and maintain peace.
12: 10 AM on 26 August 2015: Vans, Buses were set on fire by the protesters.
12:15 AM:Curfew imposed in Mehsana, Unjha, Sarthana and Kapodra areas.
Reaction from other communities:
Several other communities leaders also started agitation demanding reservation in similar lines including Brahmin, Thakore, Vaishnava, Rajput, Sindhi, Kansara, Soni and Raghuvanshi communities.
