K Prithika Yashini becomes the first transgender to be appointed as a police officer in Tamil Nadu, all thanks to the remarkable judgement by the Madras High Court which directed Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board (TNUSRB) to appoint her as the sub-inspector as she deserved the job. The court also directed TNUSRB to have the third category of ‘transgenders’ before their next recruitment process.
Yashini was born as K Pradeep Kumar and converted to transgender only after joining college when she gathered the courage to go for a medical examination. After it was medically confirmed that she is a transgender, she left her home in order to save her family from embarrassment and underwent a sex re-assignment surgery and got all the documents changed.
Yashini’s application was initially rejected by TNUSRB stating that her documents didn’t match with the original certificates. She then approached the court and appealed for granting her permission to appear for the written examination. She was again rejected during field trials because of the difference of 1.1 seconds in a 100 metres race.
The first bench then said: “We do not think that in the physical endurance test, a difference of 1.11 seconds should come in the way of Prithika in being considered for recruitment. The discrimination suffered by transgenders would be difficult for other two genders to realise, the judges said, adding, “the present case is one where the petitioner was categorised as a man, though she was a female. She had undergone sufferance of an exit from her house without parental protection. She petitioner has been endeavouring to eke out a living.”
This is indeed a great step towards gender equality. Hopefully, this instils confidence in the entire community.
