India is a land of diversity. There are more than 120 major languages and over 1500 other languages that exist in India. It means that it is really difficult to connect with 1.2 Billion Indian population with the use of a single language. Therefore, it becomes really important to connect with them in their own regional language.
All these big brands & media houses have set up regional offices to ensure local communication and information distribution in a language people prefer. Quite similar is the case with the entertainment industry. Other than Bollywood which is the biggest film Industry of India, there are a lot of other film industries that exist which probably, most of you haven’t heard of.
Let’s have a look at these film industries:
1. Pollywood (Punjabi Language)
It is commonly known as Punjabi Cinema. The Punjabi film industry had produced around 1000 movies by 2009. The first ever Punjabi film was made in Kolkata and released in Lahore. Pollywood has its major audience in states of Punjab, Haryana & Delhi.
2. Chhollywood (Chhattisgarhi language)
Kahi Debe Sandesh was the first chhollywood movie released in 1965. Lata Mangeshkar also sang for a movie called Bhakla. Chhollywood has its major audience in states of Chattisgarh, Jharkhand etc.
3. Tollywood (Bengali & Telugu Language)
Telugu Tollywood has its main audience in states of Andhra Pradesh & Karnataka. While Bengali Tollywood, also known as the cinema of West Bengal, has its main audience in West Bengal & parts of Assam. Tollywood was the very first Hollywood-inspired name dating back to 1932 in an article in American Cinematographer.
4. Kollywood (Tamil Language)
Based out of Chennai, Kollywood is the second largest film production center in India in terms of the number of films produced and gross revenue. The first silent film in Tamil was made in 1916.
5. Mollywood (Malayalam Language)
India’s first 3D film was made in Malayalam. Besides this, world’s first film with just one actor in the cast was also made in Malayalam. Based in Trivandrum, Malayalam film industry is flourishing very fast.
6. Sandalwood (Kannada Language)
It is commonly known as Cinema of Karnataka. Based in Bangalore, Sandalwood today produces more than 100 films a year.
7. Jollywood (Jharkhandi Language)
The Jharkhand film Industry is not very old. Their first movie was released in 1994.
8. Ollywood (Odia Language)
Ollywood’s first movie was based on Indian Mythological Drama Ramayana and was made in a budget of Rs 30,000 in 1936.
9. Sollywood (Sindhi Language)
As of today, Sindhi Movies are majorly produced in Pakistan & India.
10. Dhollywood (Gujarati Language)
Narsinh Mehta (1932) was the first full-length Gujarati talkie. The industry has produced more than 1000 films till date.
