Established by Dr. Vikram Sarabhai in 1969, ISRO is the only organization in the world which has been successful in entering mars in its very first attempt. The fascinating part about this story is the total cost of this mission was $450 crore which is less than the budget of movie Gravity. I am sure this fact is known to most of us.
But there are some other unique facts about this stellar organization that will make you feel immensely proud.
1. The first rocket launched by ISRO was transported on an old jeep and a faulty crane.
2. 1981’s Apple satellite was transported on a bullock cart. Indians have jugaad for everything.
3. ISRO’s last 40 years expenditure is equivalent to NASA’s single year budget.
4. ISRO was established 8 years after Pakistan’s Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO). ISRO till date has launched 65 satellites in comparison to Pakistan 2 satellites.
5. ISRO’s budget is just 0.34% of central govt. expenditure and 0.08% of India’s GDP. With this kind of miniscule expenditure, ISRO has done a lot for our nation.
6. ISRO is one of the six agencies in the world which has the capability to launch satellites from its own soil.
7. Apart from its 65 own satellites, ISRO has launched 45 foreign satellites till date and earned a whopping 637 crores.
8. Chandrayaan-1 was India’s first unmanned lunar probe which successfully entered the lunar orbit in November 2008 and joining the elite group among other nations involved in lunar exploration including USA, Japan, China, erstwhile USSR.
9. Bhuvan is a web-based 3Dsatellite imagery tool developed by ISRO which is the desi version of Google Earth.
