Let me be brutally honest with you. It is not because of an actor that we enjoy a movie but because of the decision taken by the director to convert that idea into a script and then to a film. I do not intend to say that actors are no good. They definitely are as they make the story look wonderful with their excellent acting skills. Movies like ‘A Wednesday’ and ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ would not have been possible without superb acting by Naseeruddin Shah and Farhan Akhtar respectively.
And, there are some Bollywood directors who not only entertained viewers by staying behind the scenes with a camera but they also jumped on to the acting bandwagon and proved their prowess there as well. Take a look.
1. Amol Gupte
For those who don’t know, Mr. Gupte was the creative director and screenwriter for the movie Taare Zameen Par. Besides direction, he also impressed audiences with his acting in movies like Phas Gaye Re Obama, Bheja Fry 2 and Singham Returns etc.
2. Anurag Kashyap
A name that needs no introduction. Besides playing cameo roles in a lot of his own movies he played a full fledged role in Tigmanshu Dhulia’s Shagird.
3. Farhan Akhtar
His directorial debut Dil Chahta Hai broke all records of its time. Born in a family of artists he has that thing in his blood. He also proved his brilliance as an actor with movies like Rock On!!, Bhaag Milka Bhaag, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara etc.
4. Karan Johar
We all saw him acting alongside Shahrukh Khan in the movie DDLJ. But his role as Kaizad Khambatta in Anurag Kashyap’s Bombay Velvet only showed that he is equally skillful as an actor.
5. Tigmanshu Dhulia
A lot of you may not know that he always wanted to be an actor. When he joined National School of Drama (NSD) in 1986 he studied acting and was trained to be an actor. Now, I am not surprised how he performed such a difficult character of Ramadhir Singh in the movie Gangs of Wasseypur with so much ease.
6. Mahesh Manjrekar
He made his directorial debut with movie Vaastav starring Sanjay Dutt. But his testimony as an actor only came after he played the role of ‘Baali’ in movie Kaante. He would be next seen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani.
7. Sudhir Mishra
Throughout his career spanning over 3 decades he remained as a director mostly and directed critically acclaimed and award winning movies like Dharavi, Main Zinda Hoon, Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi etc. but he also played the role of Bigg Boss, Haji Bhaijan, in the movie Traffic Signal.
8. Nagesh Kukunoor
His exceptional direction skills garnered him a couple of international awards and a national award. In most of the movies he directed, he also played an actor with the same conviction. Some of his great performances include Dor, Hyderabad Blues and Rockford.
9. Rajat Kapoor
Rajat Kapoor’s acting and directorial career ran almost parallelly. His most recent directorial venture Ankhon Dekhi, wherein he also acted, won him critical reviews. Bheja Fry, Dasvidania, Phas Gaye Re Obama continue to be his best performances as an actor.
