From Shelter To Transport: See How Chennairains.org Is Helping Chennai

The fact that Chennai Rains have done a lot of damage to the beautiful city would be an understatement. It is the worst ever rainfall of the century and we are still not sure if the worst is over. People from every walk of life are supporting in their own possible ways – From mobile recharge to transport services, water bottles to food, clothes & blankets to shelter, everyone’s doing their bit to help the people stranded in rains.

Amid this phase of natural calamity, there’s one website Chennairains.org which is connecting the people who are offering help to the people who need help. This website was developed by Karthik Balakrishnan who agreed to help Sowmya Rao and his friends who starting this initiative through Google spreadsheets.

The initial spreadsheet had details of a few people offering shelter just for that night. However, lots of people started sharing it and many people got in touch to help. The details kept adding up all night, she told The News Minute.

The website crowdsources information from social media sites and feeds into the website. The people who turn to the website can find out about important contacts, people offering shelter, food, transport, medical services and so on.

“We began with shelter on Tuesday when the rainfall was incessant, and graduated to food and rescue on Wednesday. So far at least 800 people have looked for shelter, 600 for food and at least 2,000 are in need of rescue,” said Balakrishnan who developed the website.
