On this day, two of the most charismatic leaders were born in India – Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri. Leaders who fought for Indian freedom struggle and wanted India to become a free nation. Besides freedom, they also wanted the people to be free from poverty and be self-sufficient.
While poverty is still rampant in India, there are people who are trying to change things, who are trying to make India a better place. And, it is because of efforts by such people India is making a mark on the global map.
Let’s look at the story of 4 villages which used Bamboo plantation (because of abundance in those regions) to earn a livelihood.
1. Pengdhusi village, Odisha
With a total of 568 residents in 149 households, 110 households are Below poverty line (BPL) leading to a deprived condition of the people staying in that region. There was one important thing that this village has – Bamboo – which was never thought of as a product that can help earn a living. Thanks to SBIs fellowship programme offered under “Youth for India” initiative which helped this village and they started making Ballpoint pens made of Bamboo and selling it to nearby areas and districts.
2. Jeypore block (Koraput district of Odisha)
This is a case of an ICDS Centre which is also known as Anganwadi. There were problems with the supply of food (mid-day meals) to the Anganwadi and malnourishment was high. Kitchen gardens solved the problem considerably. An easy cooker made of hay, bamboo and a jute bag is a bit like a hot case. It is cost effective, economises on fuel and keeps rice hot for six hours. Weavers and self-help groups sell these cookers providing an alternate source of Income.
3. Dang Village, Gujarat
This is another village which is rich in the bamboo plantation. Under SBI fellowship, Anant Vats worked with this village who helped artisans make bamboo axes, splitters, etchers. Not just manufacturing these products, Anant supported the village artisans to produce a better product through use of technology which resulted in increase income for the artisans.
4. Ambapara and Dagarpada Villages, Gujarat
This is another village that was part of Anant’s fellowship programme, where he helped artisans produce Bamboo mugs. As a result of his efforts, the sales were increased by 40%. He helped both villages increase their efficiency and productivity.
