Amitabh Bachchan seems to be in love with the name ‘Vijay’. Apparently, his directors liked the name so much and they wanted him to be named Vijay in most of his movies. But it was because this name only that got him this stardom. Movies like Zanjeer and Deewar were the first two movies that proved to be the turning point in his career and his eventual rise to a mega star in the film industry. Surprisingly, in both the movie his character was named ‘Vijay’.

1. Inspector Vijay Khanna in Zanjeer (1973)
Zanjeer Movie was originally offered to Dharmendra. Due to dates issue, he couldn’t sign it. Fortunately, Amitabh Bachchan got the role and this movie made Amitabh Bachchan a superstar and started the series of “angry-young-man-films”.
2. Vijay in Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974)
It’s the story of a family struggling to fulfill even the basic necessities of life – Roti (food), kapda (clothing) and makaan (shelter). Due to elder brother’s inability to secure a basic living for his family, Vijay decides to enter the crime world and earn money through wrong means.
3. Vijay Verma in Deewaar (1975)
It’s a story of two brothers Ravi and Vijay Verma, who choose to follow different paths to make their careers. While one decides to live a good life and becomes a police officer and the other becomes an Underworld don. Amitabh Bachchan’s role was loosely based on famous Bombay smuggler Haji Mastan.
4. Vijay in Hera Pheri (1976)
This is a movie to watch Amitabh doing great comedy at the time when he successfully carried the image of an angry young man image. The comic timing of Amitabh, Vinod Khanna, and Asrani is superb.
5. Vijay in Don (1978)
The movie was one of the best thrillers of 1970 and it still packs a punch today. The movie has lots of twists and turns.
6. Vijay Kumar in Trishul (1978)
Vijay sets out to take revenge from his father(Sanjeev Kumar) who abandoned him and his mother. His father is a businessman. Amitabh sets up a rival business and destroys him.
7. Inspector Vijay in The Great Gambler (1979)
The movie was way ahead of it’s time and not very well received by the audiences. But Amitabh Bachchan beautifully played the double role as a gangster and a police inspector.
8. Captain Vijay Pal Singh in Kaala Patthar (1979)
Haunted by his past of being branded as a coward, Vijay Pal Singh decides to work in coal mines. One day water forced itself in one of the mining tunnels, endangering the lives of over 400 workers. Along with others help, Vijay puts up a fight and saves the life of workers and overcomes his troubled past.
9. Vijay in Do Aur Do Paanch (1980)
It was one of the finest comedies of Amitabh-Shashi Combination. Both play con men who are trying to abduct a multi millionaire’s son for a hefty sum.
10. Vijay Varma in Dostana (1980)
It’s a story of two childhood friends and how it is spoiled by a local enemy named Daaga. The story lacked innovation but it’s a hit at the box office because of star power and amazing songs by Kishore and Rafi.
11. Vijay Kumar in Shaan (1980)
This movie was one of Kulbhushan Kharbanda’s iconic performances. The story of two brothers Ravi & Vijay who avenge their elder brother’s death by killing top gangster Shakaal.
12. Vijay Kumar in Shakti (1982)
The story of an honest cop who is assigned the job of arresting his criminal son. The cop has to decide either love for his child and his duty to the society. The movie didn’t do well at the box office.
13. Vijay in Aakhree Raasta (1986)
The story of David, an old prisoner, who completes 24 years of imprisonment for the crime he never committed. On coming back, he plans to kill all 3 men, the reason for David’s wrongful imprisonment. The film was earlier titled Qaid Ki Dairy.
14. Inspector Vijay Kumar Srivastav in Shahenshah (1988)
A cop named Vijay Kumar plays a corrupt police officer during the day and plays Shahenshah during the night punishing & executing corrupt people doing evil things in the society. Jackie Shroff was originally offered the role played by Amitabh.
15. Vijay Dinanath Chavan in Agneepath (1990)
Master Dinanath (Alok Nath) is lynched by villagers after being framed by local don Kancha Chinna. Vijay sets out to become a gangster to avenge his father’s killer. Amitabh was initially criticized for his voice, but it later went on to become the most memorable characters ever.
16. Inspector Vijay Verma in Akayla (1991)
This movie was Ramesh Sippy and Amitabh’s collaboration after almost 10 years.
17. Vijay Kapoor in Ek Rishtaa: The Bond of Love (2001)
Initially, director Sunil Darshan wanted to make a thriller but later abandoned it to make a family drama inspired from his own life story. Amitabh plays an affluent businessman.
18. Vijay Singh Rajput in Aankhen (2002)
Vijay, A quirky bank manager who is too strict that he punishes every employee upon making mistakes. Later, he is asked to leave the bank due to fighting with employees. As a result, he plans to take revenge by hiring 3 blind people to loot the same bank.
19. Thakur Vijay Singh in Ganga (2006)
This was the first Bhojpuri film to have more than a 100 prints released in the first week. Amitabh plays a wealthy landlord.
20. Thakur Vijay Singh in Gangotri (2007)
This was a sequel of movie Ganga.
21. Vijay in Nishabd (2007)
The story of a man named Vijay who falls in love with her daughter’s friend. Amitabh declined an interview with CNN IBN that this movie was inspired by Vladimir Nabokov’s novel ‘Lolita’.
22. Vijay Harshvardhan Malik in Rann (2010)
Amitabh plays the owner of a big media house who runs his channel with truth and honesty and believed in the ideology of telling the truth to viewers. The movie also portrays how media houses play with news stories to raise their own viewership.
