Just a month before at a security conference, Bsides, at Austin, Texas Reuben hacked into an android phone, dump all its contacts and logs, run a video stream from the device and geolocate a user’s location. All this was done by a 9-year-old third grader of Indian origin named Reuben Paul, a student of Harmony school of Science in Texas.
At an age when most of the kids play games on their parents cell phones, Reuben is the founder of a gaming company called Prudent Games. He is a security researcher aka ‘hacker’ with an ability to hack into smartphones and computer systems of unsuspecting victims.
Despite his interest in tech and cyber security, he is not a criminal. In fact, he hopes to create awareness about the importance of cyber security for kids and adults in today’s world.
How Did Reuben’s interest grow in cyber security? How did he get all the knowledge??
In an interview with idigitaltimes, his father, Meno Paul, said that his passion for cyber security began at a very early age. When Reuben was 5, he saw him using words like firewall with so much ease and conviction, Meno added who also works in the field of cyber security as the CEO of SecuRisk Solutions.
After realizing his son’s potential Meno began teaching him cyber security concepts and introduced him to the world of programming.
How did he start Prudent Games?
When Reuben was in second grade, his teacher asked him to do a project which required him to design a learning game to share with the class. As other students walked in with hand-drawn board and card games, Reuben came with a full blown app he had written called ‘Shuriken Math’ which helps kids learn maths by playing games. The school liked it so much that they encouraged him to get it published on the App Store. It is then he started, with the help of his parents, Prudent Games.
After his first app, he began to attract attention of others including Hord Tipton, Executive Director (ISC)2, who suggested him to develop apps related to cyber security. With the help of his father, Reuben then designed his first cyber security app, Cracker Proof, which teaches kids about building strong passwords in a fun way.
After successfully building these apps, Reuben wanted to share his learning with the world so he applied to DerbyCon, a renowned hackers conference where he gave his first presentation titled “InfoSec From The Mouth Of Babes.” Besides his debut talk at DerbyCon, in September 2014, he has since keynoted at several industry leading information security conferences such as (ISC)2 Security Congress, Hou.Sec.Con, Ground Zero InfoSec Summit in New Delhi, India and BSides, Austin.
