Bride Asks Groom To Promise To Fund Education Of 11 Girls As The ‘8th Phera’

Marriage in India is an occasion of grand celebration. Most of the weddings that we visit have a grand display of wealth. More importantly, people take weddings as a challenge to surpass all others. Amid this grand show of wealth, what we are about to witness is a marriage with a difference.

In Haryana, a bride put a condition in front of the groom before taking the marriage vows that he will fund the education of 11 girls. Without a second thought, Sandeep, the groom, nodded his head in agreement in front of all guests who acted as a witness to what we call the 8th Phera.

Poonam, the bride, who completed her post graduation from a local government college recalled an 8th phera that was introduced in Bhiwani by a Red Cross worker a few years ago. The eighth phera between the couple was a promise to never partake in female foeticide.

“Initially, everyone, including me, was in shock to hear her ask Sandeep to take a pledge before they head for the pheras. But when she elaborated and told the people present that she wanted her husband to sponsor the education of 11 girls, we were all happy,” Sanjay Ramphal who has been a close aide of Poonam told TOI.

Poonam also mentioned that she already hinted Sandeep about such thing to happen but would reveal at the right time. Perhaps, their wedding was the right time for her.

Because Sandeep owns a coaching centre, for Poonam her pledge stood justified.

Such a thing is rare to be seen at an Indian wedding. Kudos Poonam.
