While The United States has declared gay marriages to be legal, there is still a long way to go for India.
Here is a list of most famous gay people who are either born or raised in India.
1. Andrew Harvey
Andrew is an author, religious scholar and teacher of mystic traditions, known primarily for his popular nonfiction books on spiritual or mystical themes, beginning with his 1983 A Journey in Ladakh. He is the author of over 30 books, including, The Hope, A Guide to Sacred Activism, The Direct Path, the critically acclaimed Way of Passion: A Celebration of Rumi, The Return of the Mother and Son of Man.
2. Ashok Row Kavi
He is an Indian journalist and one of India’s most prominent LGBT rights activists.Due to his early difficulty in dealing with his homosexuality, he enrolled as a Hindu monk in the Ramakrishna Mission and studied theology. Encouraged by a senior monk, he left the monastery to freely explore and express his homosexuality.
3. Parvez Sharma
Parvez is an internationally renowned New York based Indian writer and filmmaker. He is best known for the multiple award winning and acclaimed film A Jihad for Love, on gay and lesbian Muslims. The influential UTNE Reader named him one of “50 Visionaries changing your world” in a list headed by the Dalai Lama in 2009.
4. Sridhar Rangayan
He is an Indian filmmaker who has made films with special focus on queer subjects. His queer films, The Pink Mirror and Yours Emotionally, have been considered groundbreaking because of their realistic and sympathetic portrayal of the largely closeted Indian gay community. His film The Pink Mirror remains banned in India by the Indian Censor Board because of its homosexual content. Rangayan was born in Mandya, Karnataka.
5. Vikram Seth
He is an Indian novelist and poet. He has written several novel and poetry books. He has received several awards including Padma Shri, Pravasi Bharatiya Samman, WH Smith Literary Award and Crossword Book Award.
6. Ismail Merchant
Ismail was an Indian-born film producer and director, best known for the results of his famously long collaboration with Merchant Ivory Productions which included director James Ivory as well as screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala. Their films won six Academy Awards. He died in London in 2005.
