Not a lot of us think on the lines as these guys thought. Three friends – Padmanaban Gopalan, Sudhakar and Dinesh – started an initiative exactly one year back called NoFoodWaste. They started collecting excess food at weddings and hotels that could be packed and given to the hungry in Coimbatore.
They won a $1000 grant from a US-based NGO called Pollination Project. It is an institution which grants to fund individual change makers, every day of the year, emphasizing projects that expand compassion and generosity in the world. The founder of the NGO said that they selected 4 out of 150 applications working on human rights, social justice, animal advocacy, the environment, arts activism, and women’s rights.
Padmanaban was very excited when he got the grant. There project got more than 4000 votes. Generally, they scrutinize the project and grant it. But since this was their 1000th grant, they launched the public voting system, Padmanaban said.
Earlier they used to fund NoFoodWaste all by themselves. “Now that we have got the grant, we will use it to mobilize more people in the campaign”, he said. The team plans to expand it to Tirupur, Erode, Salem, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri etc. and also looking forward to launching a mobile app.
“On October 2, we will launch the application and the Zero Food Hour campaign,” he said in an interview with TOI.
