Which in case of movies lies in the eyes of beholder which is the director of the movie. They are the real protagonists who decide what to show, how to show and when to show. In 1990’s decade in bollywood, good movies were made but those cannot be called great or trendsetters. But the scenario in Bollywood cinema completely changed after 2000 and a lot of new film makers started coming with fresh ideas and introduced a different kind of cinema.

1. Tigmanshu Dhulia
He first wrote dialogues for the movie Dil Se which was the first bollywood movie to feature in UK top 10 list. Dhulia is passed out from National School of Drama and his film Paan Singh Tomar won National Film Award For Best Feature Film in 2012. Apart from directing, he showed his tremendous acting skills in Anurag Kashyap’s cult movie Gangs of Wasseypur.
2. Imtiaz Ali
Imtiaz was interested in theatre and dramatics right from the very beginning. He was part of the dramatics society at Hindu College and they later on moved to Mumbai to acchieve his dream of becoming an actor.
3. Vishal Bhardwaj
He got his artistic knack from his father Ram Bhardwaj who was a popular poet and lyricist. He has received six national awards and a lot of other awards and accolades at several international film festivals. He is popular for making Indian adaptation of Shakespeare Novels.
4. Madhur Bhandarkar
The most unknown fact about this director is that he learnt film making by working in a video cassette library in Khar, Mumbai where he had access to a huge collection of movies. His film Chandni Bar won National Award for Best Movie on Social Issues. He has a lot of other awards to his credit.
5. Anurag Kashyap
Anurag Kashyap made his directorial debut with movie Paanch which never got released by censor board. His brother Abhinav is also a filmmaker while his sister Anubhuti has been his assistant in most of his films. He is famous for making cult movies like Dev D, Gangs of Wasseypur, Black Friday.
6. Neeraj Pandey
All his movies as a director got critically acclaimed including A Wednesday, Special 26 & Baby. They were also commercially successful. You should watch out for his next movie – MS Dhoni: The Untold Story.
7. NIla Madhab Panda
His first feature film “I Am Kalam” won him many national awards. His new film- Kaun Kitney pani mein, a satire set up in rural India on water crisis in India. The film talks about the current scenario & how water will become a scarce currency unless we save and manage it.
8. Shoojit Sircar
He won the National Film Award for Vicky Donor in Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment category,
9. R Balki
Other than Movie direction and screen writing, he is also CCO (Chief Creative Officer) for one of the biggest Advertising Agencies in the country- Lowe Lintas. He is famous for movies like Paa, English Vinglish.
10. Dibakar Banerjee
He started his career in advertising and still continues to be an ad filmmaker. He is referred as one of the most influential filmmakers of Hindi Cinema. His films like Khosla Ka Ghosla, Oye Lucky Lucky Oye are considered to be cult movies.
11. Vikas Bahl
After doing his MBA from Narsee Monjee Institute, Mumbai began his career in advertising and later on directed Queen starring Kangana which was commercial and critical success.
12. Anand L Rai
He graduated in Engineering and later moved to Mumbai to assist his brother in Television directing and eventually landed up making his own films. His is widely known for super hit films- Tanu weds manu & Raanjhanaa.
13. Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra
He started his career as an advertising filmmaker and later directed widely hit movies like Rang De Basanti & Bhag Milkha Bhaag. His film Rang De Basanti was chosen as India’s official entry to Oscars.
14. Rajkumar Hirani
Rajkumar Hirani’s first directorial venture was Munnabhai MBBS (2003) which is considered a cult classic. In fact, all his movies were well received by both critics and the mass audience and are huge box office hits.
