11 Things You Must Know About Sikh Langar Tradition

Sikhism is known as the Bravest Community on the Earth. Words like love, sharing, sacrifice and food are within their dictionary at all times. Sikhs are very popular all over the world for their bravery, generosity and their will to serve their society and country. This is something which is known to everybody.

But there are certain you must know about their custom of Free Kitchen which is also called Langer. After going through this list you’ll get to know more about the love and spirituality attached to the tradition.

1. Langar means free kitchen i.e. anyone, from any religion, gender, cast, creed and social status can come and have food prepared and served by Sewadars (volunteers) for free. The main idea behind the concept of Langar is community dining, equality amongst people and the feeling of oneness and sharing.

2. It was started by founder of Sikhism and first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak Dev Ji. It was started to advocate the principle of equality between all people regardless of religion, caste, colour, creed, age, gender or social status.

3. Volunteers who take part in meal preparation and distribution play an important role in this tradition. These people are known as Sevadars. They do it because of their unconditional devotion to serve the community.

4. Everyone have langar after saying this prayer “Loh langar tapde rahin.” Or “May the hot plates of Langar be ever in Service(in service).”

5. Simple vegetarian food is served in Langar. It consists of dal (pulses), sabzi (vegetable), roti (chapati), aachar (pickle) and some dessert after the food.

6. The unique thing about this custom is that even Akbar visited Guru Amar Das Ji, he too had his first langar there.

7. Langars are absolutely free. It is your personal wish if you want to donate some money or any raw material which may help in community service.

8. When Langar is prepared in Golden temple, on an average 100 Quintal Wheat Flour, 25 Quintal Cereals, 10 Quintal Rice, 5000 Ltr Milk, 10 Quintal Sugar, 5 Quintal Pure Ghee is used a day.

9. When Georg von Harrach, BBC correspondent visited Langar he said “Hospitality of the highest order… Sikhs with fabulous generosity, offer everyone free food called “Langar”.

11. Mata Khivi wife of Guru Angad langar was so famous that till today it is known as Mata Khivi ji ka Langar. Mata Khivi is also mentioned in Guru Granth.
